As a family, we have a special fondness for our friendly neighbourhood state of Kerala. While we have traversed the length and breadth of the state, Munnar and Wayanad happen to hold pride of place in our travel plans. So, this time around, we decided to break the mould – after all, isn’t a brand new year all about fresh beginnings?
A whole month of browsing and bookings later, we embarked on our coastal road trip on Christmas Eve — Poovar, Varkala, Kochi — and finally, a couple of days at our favourite hill town of Coonoor (in TN).
POOVAR PURAAN
Our property at Poovar Island boasted of a vantage location, commanding a spectacular view of the golden beach right ahead and the Arabian Sea beyond it. The serene estuary flanking the resort was home to lush, verdant aquatic vegetation and a variety of birds and fishes. It opened out into the placid, emerald backwaters that were fringed by swaying coconut palms and housed patches of dense mangrove. Together, they added to the wow factor of the island. We availed the services of the resort boats to visit the sand-kissed beach and also to cruise through the dense mangrove forests in the backwaters.
Poovar is certainly recommended for all those who wish to spend a couple of days in consonance with nature, savouring the briny scents and sights, and enjoying the tingle of waves on their feet.
